Adult Summer Reading 2008 - Pollinate Your MindMay 17-July 10

Theme: "Pollinate Your Mind"

Pollinate Your Mind ...

is the theme for the North Shelby Library's 2008 Adult Summer Reading program. This means you can read anything you like (fiction/non-fiction/romance/westerns etc.) as long as you're filling your brain with thoughts and words from the world of books. If you are looking for reading ideas, click on any of the links to the left or the next time you're in the library buzz on over to the reference desk where you will find an extensive selection of reading lists to choose from.

Registration

Registration begins on Saturday, May 17th and will continue through Monday July 7th. To register, go to the Reference Desk on the 2nd Floor.

Just for registering you will receive a North Shelby Grab Bag which inlcudes Book Bucks (to purchase books in the Book Nook), and other goodies.

Participants are asked to submit a Reader Comment Form after reading each book. You can get more forms from the Reference Desk. The form will act as the reader's raffle ticket for the prize drawings at the end of each week.

Drawings will be held every Friday for the weekly prizes. After each weekly drawing the comment cards are then put into the drawing for the Grand Prize drawing held on Thursday, July 10th.

Storyteller Extraordinaire Dolores Hydock presents Through the Back Door- The Music That Bridged the Bayou
Monday, June 9th 6:00pm - 7:00pm
They say in Southwest Louisiana that you can be a Cajun in one of three ways: by blood, by ring (marriage), or through the back door (by befriending the culture). This program paints a portrait of Cajun and Creole music and musicians and the role that music played in allowing non-Cajuns to slip "through the back door" into the world of the spirited people of Southwest Louisiana.

This presentation includes stories and anecdotes collected from more than 50 Cajun and Creole musicians as they talked about the importance of music in their own lives and the lives of their families. The stories are funny, touching, sometimes irreverent and often deeply moving. The program includes samples of the music itself, both in its early style and its modern day sound. Description taken from Dolores Hydock's website, www.storypower.org
