"I find it impossible to believe that The Well and the Mine is a debut novel. It's absolutely flawless: a beautiful Depression-era story told without irony. I reveled in its shades of Harper Lee and Faulkner. Timeless, captivating, hones, brave, and not one false move." -- Suzanne Finnamore, Barnes & Noble Discover Award judge and author of Otherwise Engaged and Split.

What is the Big Read?
The Big Read is an initiative of The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The Big Read aims to address this crisis squarely and effectively. It provides citizens with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities.
The Alabama Statewide Big Read effort is a partnership between the public librarian in the state along with the Alabama Public Library Service and the Alabama Center for the Book.
The title selected for The Big Read: Alabama Reads is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. The Alabama Statewide Committee selected The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain for the first statewide Big Read because it is a title that everyone has at least heard about, if not read. The book will appeal to all ages and has a small town theme that makes it a perfect match for the Alabama Tourism initiative for the 2010 Year of the Alabama Small Town and Downtown.
